NAIOP Offers Scholarships to Underrepresented Populations

A retired real estate investment professional based in Ft. Lauderdale, Gene Berman spent more than 30 years with Marcus & Millichap, most recently as group manager and executive vice president. In the past, Gene Berman has maintained membership in professional organizations such as the Urban Land Institute and the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP).

The leading organization for real estate developers, investors, and owners in the commercial/industrial real estate industry, the NAIOP offers several scholarships aimed at cultivating an inclusive and culturally diverse workforce. In partnership with Prologis, the NAIOP offers a scholarship for up to 20 women and underrepresented minorities with at least 5 years of experience in the real estate industry. The scholarship funds coursework required for the NAIOP Certificate of Advanced Study in Commercial Real Estate Development, as well as a travel stipend to attend NAIOP’s annual conference.

Additionally, the organization’s Diversity Student Scholarship is available to students at NAIOP member schools, with preference given to those who have been underrepresented in the field of commercial real estate.

Inexpensive Drug May Counteract Leukemia Treatment-Resistance

Adding to his diverse work in the real estate sector, Gene Berman counts leukemia research among his primary interests.

A new study by Karolinska Institutet and SciLifeLab has found a promising new way to overcome treatment-resistance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. Published in the January 2020 issue of the medical journal EMBO Molecular Medicine, this study examined the blood cells of both mice and human beings.

Although physicians have long used cytarabine to treat AML, many patients are resistant to this cytotoxic drug. After testing the impact of over 33,000 different substances on leukemia cells treated with cytarabine, the Karolinska Institutet/SciLifeLab study determined that the cheap, FDA-approved and readily-available cancer drug hydroxyurea proved highly effective in overcoming cytarabine resistance.
